What exactly is Bill-C-11?

The year 2012 hasn’t started on the right foot for internet users, or more specifically internet enthusiasts. On October 26th of 2011, SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) was presented to the White House, a bill introduced by Lamar S. Smith to expand the American government’s ability to control online trafficking, specifically copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods. Quite recently, a Canadian bill has been put up for consideration, similar to SOPA. In short, Bill-C-11 would restrict not only  the internet, like SOPA, but ban the use of PVR’s, ripping CD’s to your iPod and for anyone who has had an encounter of being accused of internet piracy, their Internet Service Provider would be forced to terminate their internet access.  If Bill-C-11 goes through, this could result in the shutting down of numerous companies and putting many jobs in danger. For many, especially the youth of this generation, this internet is a place of sanctuary, escape and most of all communication. Passing Bill-C-11 would virtually be taking someone’s identity and life away. Think about all of the social networking done, how often people use Facebook to communicate to family and friends. Is this what the Mayans meant by the end of the world? Because so far, 2012 seems to be the year the internet may potentially come to an end.
