Pretty women in a drowned world…

Is a common theme found in Paris fashion week for the Spring/Summer season of 2012 according to Tim Blanks of style.com, which so happens to be very true. This underwater theme was found in the styling of Chanel, Alexander McQueen and Givenchy, each having their individual uniqueness. For example; Alexander McQueen’s glove-like bracelets and headpieces, Chanel’s backless shirts and jackets with pearl detailing and Givenchy’s shark tooth necklaces created a surfer-mermaid hybrid of a design. Other designer lines like Celine and Louis Vuitton, Prada, Valentino and Jill Sander all had a 50’s/60’s glamorous vibe to their shows. Both Celine and Prada had pleated skirts incorporated into their designs which gave an innocent ladylike feel. Speaking of sweetness and ladylike style, Louis Vuitton’s designer Marc Jacobs, collection stole the spotlight at Paris fashion week, once again. His argyle cropped sweaters and subtle polka dot detailing with the mixture of the sheer and pastel colours was just so… sweet! The delicate eyelets, lace and flower prints over sheer fabric literally took the cake when it comes to ladylike elegance. Which is really what this Paris fashion week was all about! In the Celine show, there were very strong shapes created within the clothes, it had a very structural feel to the designs due to the big wide belts placed around the models hips and waists. Even though the designer for Celine-Phoebe Philo-is known for her minimalist style, she pushed her boundaries by adding girly pleated skirts and ruffles to her Spring/Summer collection. Prada had a very chic 50’s look, using a 50’s style Cadillac as a print for many shirts and skirts, as well as using metallic detailing to spice up the collection. It was sexy, but thankfully not over the top. Ladylike, youthful and girly are adjectives describing Valentino’s collection for Summer/Spring. Designers Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuiri went for an overall structured, minimalist design but had a Lolita feel to the A-line frocks and skirts. Sheer fabrics, lace and leather detailing gave the collection a gothic feel. Lastly, Valentino wouldn’t be Valentino without it’s classic red floor length dresses, which stood out amongst the pastel and black.
Overall, this season’s Spring/Summer collection fell far from flat. From the mermaid esque vibe from Chanel and Givenchy, to Celine’s pleats and ruffles to Louis Vuitton’s and Valentino girly collections, this Spring will be out of this world.
